Library’s Annual Fundraising Gala Is a Party in the Jungle

For immediate release: September 4, 2019

Douglas County Libraries (DCL) and the DCL Foundation are excited to host the Foundation’s Fifth Annual Fete des Fables Gala – The Jungle Book on Friday, September 27, from 6-11PM at CU South Denver. This event celebrates the library’s important literacy and library programming that makes a difference in the Douglas County community, and raises funds in support of ongoing programs.

“This year’s gala will be an inspiring and fun-filled evening for guests and a great opportunity to support the library,” said DCL’s Donor Relations Liaison Elaine McCain.

Guests will enjoy a sumptuous plated dinner, cocktails, lively music and entertainment, and a fun silent auction while celebrating a classic story, “The Jungle Book,” in a whimsical setting.

Dollars raised support scholarships for DCL programs like Camp DCL and high school equivalency testing, early childhood literacy programs, and other important programs that reach youth, adults and families in Douglas County and across Colorado.

Susan James’ son, Liam, was able to attend Camp DCL this year through a scholarship granted by the DCL Foundation. “Liam had a hard year with school friends,” James said. “This camp was a shining light for him. He grew in new ways and we have new friends to play with.”

Library Reading Program Makes Pit Stops for Summer Fun

For immediate release: July 10, 2019

Douglas County Libraries (DCL) is going places this summer! The library is taking its summer reading program on the road to favorite community locales, offering cool treats and fun giveaways for Douglas County residents.

“We are meeting great people out in our community, and we keep hearing stories about their summer adventures and how they use our libraries,” said DCL Special Events Coordinator Kristen Kallio.

Stops on the Great Summer Reading Road Trip have included Discovery Park and Downhill Brewing in Parker, Butterfield Park in Castle Rock, Civic Green Park in Highlands Ranch, and Roxborough Skate Park & Playground. Many more pit stops are planned through July. To find one near you, visit DCL.org/summer-reading/activities.

The Great Summer Reading Road Trip goes through July 31. Readers of all ages still have time to sign up for the reading program and help the library reach its community goal of 16,775 registered readers. Once that goal is met, the DCL Foundation will donate $500 to Nature’s Educators, a top-rated nonprofit educational wildlife organization in Douglas County.

Devin Jaffe, Executive Director of Nature’s Educators, said the Foundation donation would be used to expand the organization’s animal enrichment collection—rope swings, training items, foraging activities, and more—for use in their wildlife enclosures.

26 New U.S. Citizens Sworn in During Naturalization Ceremony at Library

For immediate release: June 18, 2019

In partnership with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Douglas County Libraries (DCL) was pleased to host the naturalization ceremony for 26 new citizens, from 17 different countries, at its Parker location on Saturday, June 15. The new citizens, including one current DCL employee, took the Oath of Allegiance in the library’s event hall in front of their families, friends and library patrons, who also enjoyed a reception of light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.

DCL Adult Literacy Specialist Tiffany Curtin worked with USCIS to facilitate the ceremony. “I have had the pleasure of seeing firsthand how new Americans enrich our lives,” said Curtin. “At the library, we see new Americans gain the language skills to become volunteers, gain employment, pursue professional goals, earn promotions, enter higher education, support their children in school, and transform their lives. DCL is honored to host these ceremonies and welcome our community to join the celebration,” she added.

Following a performance by High Spirit Harmonies a cappella group, Chaparral High School student Ryan McPherson opened the ceremony by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The entire room also joined in the singing of the national anthem.

Curtin and DCL Information Technology Director Jeff Konishi each spoke to the room of new citizens and their guests, and an adult literacy volunteer shared her immigration story as a naturalized citizen. Mi Familia Vota was also present to help with new voter registration, and Daughters of the American Revolution representatives spoke and presented the new citizens with the United States Flag Code.

DCL offers one-on-one tutoring in English as a second language; citizenship preparation classes to help with citizenship application and interviews, with representatives from USCIS available to answer questions; English-language conversation practice groups; and basic adult education classes for aspiring citizens.
